Sponsorship
One of the biggest differentiators between getting ahead or not is Sponsorship. This takes many forms and includes:
Being included on challenging client matters
Being given ever increasing responsibilities in the delivery of work
Being included on Client Pitch Teams
Having a 'Finder' Partner show you the ropes by including you in Client Development Strategy Sessions
Having at least one Senior Partner who understands your Career Objectives and actively works with you and communicates with you on where you stand, what you need to do to progress, and when they will 'put you up' for your next promotion
As a Senior Partner once told me regarding getting promoted, "Make sure you have at least one Senior Partner POUNDING ON THE TABLE FOR YOU" when your name comes up for discussion.
